Hosta Plant Categories Information and Listings
Category Name: Blue Foliage
Description: Hostas are among the few perennials with blue leaves. Actually the leaves are green, underlying a waxy coating. This coating of wax on the leaf may persist throughout the summer, or be washed off from rain, watering, sun exposure or other environmental factors. Therefore some Hostas will lose the blue coloring and turn green at various times during the season. They can add interesting color to an otherwise all green garden. Blue Hostas grow best with less direct sun exposure.

Category Name: Gold Foliage
Description: While many plant species will have a gold leaved variety, Hostas have a wide selection of leaf sizes, shapes and textures. Rest assured, the gold coloration on these plants is not a sign of a diseased plant. They have been bred for their bright gold leaf coloration. They can be used to brighten up a dark area, or contrast with dark colored foliage, or blue leaved Hostas. Generally gold Hostas will tolerate brighter light conditions.

Category Name: White Variegated
Description: There are many white variegated Hostas, whether the white is on the leaf margin or in the center of the leaf. Direct sun exposure can sometimes be too harsh for the white variegation, and may cause it to burn (turn brown). This will not harm the plant, they just will not look their best throughout the season. Careful siting as to sun exposure may need to be considered on some varieties. If plants are unhappy in one location, try another. After all Hostas transplant very readily. White variegated Hostas standout as single specimens, or in groups. However a foil of solid color leaf varieties may need to be combined to tone down the busy look of too much variegation.

Category Name: Gold Variegated
Description: There seem to be fewer gold variegated Hostas, whether the gold is on the leaf margin or in the leaf center. They can be used as single specimens, or massed for a bold statement. The gold variegation being more muted than white variegation, blend more easily in a mixed planting of Hosta varieties. They tolerate varying amounts of light exposure, usually more than white variegated varieties.

In any case green leaved Hostas can help a mixture of variegated Hostas blend together more readily. Generally green leaved Hostas will tolerate brighter light conditions.

Category Name: Fragrant Hostas
Description: These are Hostas with fragrant flowers. As a general rule they bloom later in the summer, usually August. This is because they have been bred from the fragrant species Hosta plantaginea, which blooms with very large white flowers in August. The flowers of these Hostas are not as large as those of its parent, and they come in colors that range from white to purple. They all share the same characteristic however varying degrees of fragrance. Fragrant Hostas tolerate more sun than any group of Hostas.
